Getting ready for uni!

Hello! The start of Uni is getting closer everyday which makes me happy and anxious at the same time, I really want to give my 100 per cent this year and avoid mistakes from a year ago.

With that said I am not sure I have ever mentioned in this blog that I am doing taekwondo and Aikido as extracurricular activities. I am more into Taekwondo than anything else and I am currently a member of the committee which means less time for myslef! Not that I mind, it always feels nice to help.

Therefore, this month is going to be pretty busy due to fresher's week, I even have to break through wood as a demo! But it is good to be busy, it keeps me active and pushes me away from laziness.

Now some updates on my rain forest project:

These were the trees that I originally made but I think I'll just keep the palm tree because there's still bushes to do and that other tree is more than a 1000 polys, not good.

I am struggling a little bit keeping everything under budget. I'd love to create a beautiful rain forest but that means lots of trees and textures and I can't afford it...

Therefore I have to come up with something else...

I believe the best solution is to place the scene near the beach, or somewhere where there aren't trees everywhere! We'll see...I'll figure something out.

And this is my survivor! I took a rough concept and refined it and this is the result. I can't wait to model her!

See you soon!

3D time

Hello! As promised today's post is all about my progress on my rainforest plane crash project.

I started with the aircraft because I thought it would be the most challenging part to model but it turned out to be fairly straight forward and quite enjoyable to make.

Then I moved onto the interior, I started working on the cockpit making all the flight control panels but my poly count was quickly raising and I still had to do the passenger seats and luggage so I decided that it wasn't that important and so I moved on.

At this point I thought that my broken plane would count as a vehicle with a maximum budget of 5000 so I was happy making the seats but then I was told that because it's only a half a vehicle it's not considered one and that it becomes part of the environment.

It was going so well...

After I copied and placed all the seats I found out that my triangle count was close to 8000 and my limit was 10000. I only had done the plane! And I still had a whole rainforest to do!

I eliminated as much geometry as I could and ended up losing about 2000 triangles which was amazing. I still feel a little bit anxious that I might exceed the maximum triangle budget but I accept the challenge!

See you soon,

Carla.

Summer project!

At the end of uni we were given a list of topics and our summer work involved picking one of the topics and turn it into a 3D scene.

I decided to do the rain forest crash + survivor although it was a tough decision, I wanted to do so many of them! After picking the topic it was brainstorm time and mood board time as well. I had a pretty clear idea of what I wanted to achieve therefore this process didn't take too long.

My idea is to create a scene after a tragic aircraft crash. Only the cockpit remains intact while the rest of the plain has been spread all over the rainforest crash site. Luggage and personal items have been scattered and among this chaos only one person is struggling to stand up. It's a girl, she is in shock but determined to find more survivors, uncluding her family.

I am still developing the characer but I am close to the final outcome. Also, I am looking forward to doing a concept drawing of the whole scene.

Tomorrow I will upload my progress in terms of 3D, see you soon!

Books and art

Today it's been a typical english grey day and as soon as I woke up I just wanted to go back to sleep, curl into a ball and wait for the sun but I didn't feel sleepy anymore so I ended up getting up regardless of the awful day.

While having breakfast I thought of going to the Uni's library to look for a couple of interesting books about colour theory as I struggle in that aspect. It turns out the library closed earlier today so I went into town instead and I bought a nice little book about color and a 3D magazine.

The book is very interesting as it explains how the different colours of the visible light spectrum are seen by different cultures and their different meanings.

The mazagine was quite educational, specially regarding ZBrush which I have never used before and I'd like to use soon.

Therefore I am inspired and intimidated at the same time. There are so many amazing people in this industry...I really can't wait until I can reach their level.

Also, today I finished a character painting I have been doing from time to time during the last few days. It was meant to be a steam punk design but I am not too sure I acomplished that...regardless I am happy with it!

Sun and a little bit of rain

Hi! I know it has been a long time since I posted anything therefore I broke my promise of a daily painting... but the truth is that I went to Spain to see my family and I completely switched off from work which is good and bad at the same time.

While I was in Badalona (Barcelona) I bought a reflex camera and I love it to bits. I'm a completely amateur in photography but I am slowly learning and I think it's awesome.

Here are some pictures I took.

Apart from taking pictures I made a couple of sketches as well:

I am currently woking on my 3D summer project and I will be submiting my progress as I go along! Now that I am back I will update regularly again and keep you updated with my work.

Concept art

Daily painting: Day 7

Hello! I finally have wi-fi in the new place! Not that it matters though...
These past few days I have been practicing conceptual art since my biggest ambition is to become a concept artist. It would be my dream job...

I can't wait to be back at uni since this second year we'll be going in depth on digital painting! I am really excited about it.

I have been working on this for four days I think and it has changed so much! At first it wasn't even a conceptual painting but then it gradually turned into this.
I am still working on it and hopefully I'll finish it by the end of the weekend (fingers crossed).

Also, I started a second project and this is the initial sketch:

Bye Bye,

back to traditional art

Daily painting: Day 6

The internet has been pretty unstable recently as the company is installing wi-fi and it makes me wonder how, in a city full of students, some student residences still offer internet via ethernet cable...

Anyway, because yestarday I had no internet I decided to paint with water colours.

They're sketches, nothing too fancy, although I plan on doing a detail painting with acrylics at some point.
